Pedestrian, bicycle safety upgrades under construction on Grand Avenue

Construction underway for new bulb-outs at Grand and Linda

Work is now underway on a series of pedestrian, bicycle, and ADA improvements on Grand Avenue. This project will re-pave the stretch of Grand Avenue between Fairview and Greenbank, and install:

  • pedestrian safety enhancements (bulb-outs, flashing beacons, and high visibility striping) at the Linda and Greenbank intersections
  • bicycle safety enhancements (turn box with a flashing beacon push button, crossing markings for bicyclists) at the intersection of Grand and Linda
  • ADA compliant curb ramps at all street crossings
  • permanent bulb-out islands at the intersection of Grand and Fairview, shortening the pedestrian crossing area

The Grand and Fairview intersection will provide the City’s first “green infrastructure” – a landscaped bioswale that improves drainage and supports soil filtering of storm water.

Bulb-outs under construction at Grand and Linda

Construction work began on April 23, starting the intersections at Linda and Sunnyside Avenues. Once construction on all bulb-outs and curb ramps is complete, the roadway will be re-paved as the final step. Work is expected to be complete in August.

This project is supported by a $500,000 Alameda County Transportation Commission grant and continues the City’s implementation of the 2021 Safer Streets Plan, which identified the Grand/Linda and Grand/Greenbank intersections as two of the top ten priority locations for pedestrian safety improvements citywide.

In recent years, the City has completed similar safety improvements at several intersections on Oakland Avenue, with bulb outs and flashing beacons added at the Oakland/Howard and Oakland/Sunnyside intersections in 2022 and Oakland/Jerome and Oakland/El Cerrito in 2024.

A grant application is currently pending for pedestrian safety improvements on Moraga, which would add bulb-outs, high visibility crosswalks, and flashing beacons at the intersections of Moraga with Ramona, Highland, Mesa, and Red Rock Road.
