Project Manager George Sanen will present a status update on community pool construction at the March 18 City Council meeting. Despite significant weather impacts slowing work, construction is on track for completion next winter and the project remains within budget.
A heavy rainy season beginning in December has created a challenging site environment. Nonetheless, the project has continued to move forward thanks to precautions the City took early last fall to winterize the site, mitigating the worst potential impacts and allowing construction to progress. Crews recently completed footings for and are now forming the site’s third retaining wall, which runs along the Recreation Building and Magnolia Avenue. A concrete pour to complete the retaining wall is scheduled for later this month.
Simultaneously, the pool building is taking shape. With the steel frame and building footings in place, crews are now transitioning to interior buildout and recently completed construction of concrete masonry walls on the main level. Looking ahead, excavation will soon begin for the main pool.
The team has also completed removal of buried fuel tanks discovered on the site during excavation, a complex process which must be permitted and coordinated through Alameda County Environmental Health. The City is currently pursuing State funding to offset costs associated with removal and mitigation of the tanks.

City recruiting now for Aquatics Supervisor
The City is moving forward with confidence preparing for the winter opening and is currently recruiting for an Aquatics Supervisor who will manage day-to-day pool operations.
This new position was a key recommendation in an operational analysis prepared by Isaac Sports Group (ISG), a firm specializing in aquatics facility management. In their findings, ISG determined that with the expanded operational scope including year-round use of two pools, increased programming, and new facility management needs associated with an all-electric pool, a dedicated supervisor-level position would be required to maintain the high level of service the Piedmont community expects.
The City Council approved the new classification on March 4, and recruitment is open through April 1. Applications are available at piedmont.ca.gov/AquaticsSupervisor.
New pool will offer activity and gathering space for all ages
Construction of the long-awaited new community pool began in February 2023. The facility will include a 27-meter competition pool with a diving well, a 3,177 square foot activity pool with three 25-yard lap lanes, and a single-story building featuring locker rooms, an indoor multi-purpose room, two gender neutral changing rooms, and a rooftop pavilion.
